The best answer to absenteeism? Putting work wellbeing on the board’s agenda
Companies spend billions on gym memberships, wellbeing apps and coaching. Yet sickness absence keeps rising. In MT/Sprout, Arosha Brouwer, Chief Impact Officer at Colbe, explains why work wellbeing therefore belongs on the board’s agenda.

According to Brouwer, it’s not just about responding to absenteeism, but about understanding its causes and actively influencing the factors that can lead to people dropping out. This broad, strategic approach makes work wellbeing a topic for the boardroom, not just for HR.
That’s exactly why Colbe is introducing the Work Wellbeing Capability Model. The model distinguishes six levels, ranging from failing to meet legal requirements to wellbeing that is strategically embedded throughout the entire organisation. Brouwer suspects that most Dutch organisations are at level three or four. They mainly focus on reducing absence costs and work with various providers, without a shared vision.
